About Us
In the early 1970s, Mimmo Magliulo arrived in New York carrying more than a suitcase. He brought with him the spirit of Southern Italy. Alongside his wife Tonia, he began importing fresh burrata, mozzarella, and handcrafted cheeses, delivering them directly to restaurants across the city and building relationships one delivery at a time.
When Chelsea Market emerged as a hub for independent food purveyors, Buon’Italia found its home. Invited to open a storefront in the market’s early days, Mimmo created a space rooted in a simple idea: to offer the finest Italian ingredients with care, consistency, and integrity.
Behind the counter, Tonia introduced the recipes of her childhood. What began as a modest kitchen became a beloved part of the store, where her Neapolitan dishes brought warmth and familiarity to both locals and visitors.
As the business grew, Mimmo traveled throughout Italy, sourcing olive oils, flours, pasta, pistachios, and cheeses of uncompromising quality. Over time, Buon’Italia became not only a destination for home cooks, but a trusted partner to chefs, restaurants, and specialty retailers across the country.
Today, Buon’Italia remains a family-run business. From its home in Chelsea Market to its growing presence nationwide, the company continues to connect customers across the United States with the ingredients, traditions, and relationships that define Italian food at its best.
